Introduction: What is the Role of a Creative Director?
Creative directors are responsible for the overall creative strategy and execution of a given project. They make sure that the creative vision is executed to perfection by managing a team of designers stylists photographers and other creatives.
The role of a creative director is to make sure that all aspects of a project are done well. This includes set design, make up, styling, wardrobe and many other things
Why Hiring a Creative Director is Important for Your Next Project
Creative directors have a lot of responsibilities and they are often the ones who oversee the entire creative process. They are responsible for overseeing the creative team, managing budgets, and ensuring that deadlines are met. They also need to be able to think creatively themselves and be able to come up with new ideas for campaigns.
Creative directors usually have a background in advertising or design. They need to have a good understanding of what makes a good campaign and what is going on in the industry right now. Creative directors also need to have strong leadership skills as they will be working with people from all different backgrounds. Most importantly it’s important to hire a creative director because people often assume that a photographer can take on that role also. The bottom line is that the creative direction of a project is probably the most important determinate of what that final product will look like. Photographers have a great deal of responsibility and project management cannot be effectively managed while worrying about lighting, exposure, equipment and so much more technical aspects of handling your camera. Also any full time photographer will tell you, there is not enough hours in the day to manage the projects as well as edit, process and prepare for photoshoots.
The skills necessary for being a Creative Director and a competent photographer do not intersect. One must have an innate understanding of the creative process and the ability to plan, execute, and manage a successful advertising campaign. Creative Directors must also be able to work collaboratively with a team of other creatives as well as clients to achieve the best results possible. Photographers, on the other hand, have an eye for light, technical expertise, composition and understanding of what is needed during the shoot in order to achieve final product goals of post processing.

How to Find the Best Creative Director for Your Photoshoot
The right creative director can make or break a photoshoot. They are the ones in charge of the overall look and feel of the shoot, including both visual aesthetics and emotional impact.
To find the best creative director for your photoshoot, you need to know what you are looking for in a creative director. You should be able to articulate what you want in terms of the overall aesthetic and message that you want conveyed through your photos.
You should also have an idea of who your target audience is, so that you can find someone who has experience working with similar audiences. The creative director is a professional! Not your friend filling in for the role. The person should have a portfolio of work and be well organized. Also a friend in a lot of situations doesn’t have the accountability of a paid professional.
If you're a photographer, you should know that hiring the right creative director is essential to your success. If you don't, you'll end up with a dull and uninteresting photo shoot. My practice is to always steer clients to hiring a creative director for the shoot. In fact it’s so important I considering hiring one to work with me on all my shoots.
